On June 15,2012 a new program was birth by the Obama administration. This new program would change the lives of roughly 1.2 million illegal immigrants who arrived here in the United States as children. This program is called Deferred action for childhood arrivals, or DACA for short. This program came to be because of congress’s failure to pass the Dream Act or any comprehensive legislation on immigration that could possibly benefit these people.

DACA is a program that provides illegal immigrants to fall into a grey area where they are cloaked from being deported and would have access to a social security card, drivers license and many other benefits a legal resident may have. To qualify for DACA you must meet all of the following criteria. First you must have arrived in the United States before the age of 16 years old. Second you must have continuously stayed in the United States between June 15,2007 and June 15,2012. Third you must apply for this program between the age of 15-31. You must have graduated high school or still go to school, and you must not commit any felonies or no more than 3 misdemeanors while in the United States. After proving all of these are satisfied you will then need to get your biometrics taken and pay fees for documentation and other legal expenses. You must renew your status every two years and if you fail to meet any of these criteria you will not be allowed to renew your status.

Many congressional leaders have public ally stated their dislike for this program and how it should have been marked as unconstitutional because President Obama shouldn’t have taken the issue into his own hands, and should have relied on congress to solve the situation. Most of this is just partisan politics and I would like to dissect this topic of immigration (DACA) and show what it has done for these immigrants, what the immigrants have done for America, and show you all the journey DACA has taken and how it will be affected in the near future.
